China will be sending mini-ecosystems containing potato seeds and silkworm eggs next year. This will be an attempt to understand how organisms will develop on the lunar surface. The 3-kg mini-ecosystem will be sent to the moon by Chang’e 4. The potato seeds and silkworm eggs will be carried by a 18 centimeter-tall cylinder.

Silkworms are expected to hatch and produce carbon dioxide whereas the potato plants will generate oxygen. The mission is to prepare for future moon landings and possible human inhabitants.

China is also planning for a manned mission to the Moon, for which preparations are already underway.

First habitation of Mars, and now Moon. Although I am excited to know more about both the projects/missions, I wished that someone also launched sustainable habitation of Earth.
